The reviews that I have read on the Kindle Fire 8.9" 4G LTE Wireless model have been pretty weak. So, I decided to write my own.
I didn't want to spend the money on an iPad 3 but I wanted something smaller that will give me some of the functionality as a tablet.
The design of this model is nice. When you turn your Kindle on landscape mode, the shortcut bar switches on the right side of the screen.
Now you don't have to search for the shortcuts. A lot of vertical space is consumed when the Kindle is in landscape mode. So, I am glad the buttons were placed at the bottom of the screen.
On the previous model, the home button was located on the left but now they put it on the right. I don't particularly care for this but I can deal with it as long as my landscape space is freed up.
The Kindle 4G does not weigh your arm down. It can be held more easily in one hand. The large bezel is not pleasing to the eyes but I'll deal with it.
This Kindle model weighs in at 20oz. It is really lightweight. The backing feels good to the touch but thicker than an iPad. The larger screen and the volume buttons were improved on this model.
With both speakers on both sides of the display, the Kindle 4G puts out some good sound that fills an entire room.
You can store your music in the Cloud but Amazon limits you to 250 songs, oh well. The software that comes with the Kindle like X-ray allows you to learn more about movies and books.
After using it once or twice, I got tired of X-ray and just wanted to enjoy the movie. I like the Free Time software because my children enjoy it.
While they are enjoying the Kindle, I have some piece of mind in knowing what they are doing. Free Time mode emits a vibrant bright blue color in the background on the display which lets me know my children are viewing what they are supposed to be viewing.
I can also closely modify their time while playing to be sure they are sharing with one another. This model is built kid-tough, so I don't have to worry about them damaging the device.
The platform that Amazon uses for the Kindle 4G is a customized version of Android 4.0. Now, this by no means replaces the iPad. It is just used by Amazon to sell you stuff. This platform is used by Amazon to make it easier for you to buy items from Amazon via your tablet/e-reader.
The Home screen on the Android can be customized with widgets, weather apps, and live wallpapers; but you cannot do this with the Kindle.
The immersive reading feature is a nice touch to this model. With immersive reading you can play an audio book while reading at the same time. You can just listen to the book being read if you get tired of reading it on the screen. This feature uses Dolby sound as well.
You'll appreciate the fact that the Silk browser runs faster and smoother than the other models. You can turn your full screen mode on; or it can be turned to "reading view" mode.
Background noise that takes up valuable space is cleared when in "reading view" mode. Uploading and downloading some MS Word documents and PDF files can be done quite easily.
Book titles and movies display the same way as they did on the original model. You still have that library look and feel. Your book titles are easily and clearly displayed. This way, you can find what you are searching for quickly at a glance.
Now this was a great innovative idea by Amazon. The Kindle 4G has Whisper-sync. What Whisper-sync allows you to do is access your media on any Kindle device. So, if you download an e-book on a Kindle HD 7", you can view it on the Kindle 4G. Isn't that just the coolest thing?
When you are using a Wi-Fi connection, Skype works with no problems but the desktop app works much better. If you need to check your e-mail or update your status on Facebook you can. Facebook has been integrated on the 4G.
You can update your status, view photos, and do some web browsing. The Kindle 8.9" 4G LTE Wireless has a lot of functionality as a tablet without the hefty price tag.
