I had always hoped that I might be able to use medical billing companies to help my small medical practice, but I felt like they were only for big hospitals or for super rich doctors. For several years I have owned a very moderate medical practice in a small town. My practice does not make too much money, but I really love what I do and I enjoy getting to know the people I serve. The only area where I have run into problems is with billing, since it is difficult for my nurse and me to follow up on each and every payment when we are focusing on serving our patients.
One day one of our pipes broke and it turned out that we would need to replace most of the plumbing which was going to be very pricey. We needed some extra cash and decided that we would have to get into our unpaid bills and get some of our patients to pay up. Now this doesn't mean that most of our patients don't pay their bills, but there have been some that have slipped through the cracks. Nearly all of our patients are very good about making their payments and are very prompt with their payments, but every now and then there are some who just don't pay.
This was a very wearisome and difficult task, and we discovered that our filing system was not actually very effective. However, we were able to contact the patients who had not paid and collect the money they owed, and got enough to get our clinic back up to par. Unfortunately, a short time later I began hearing some weird noises from the furnace room.
This time I got a head start and attempted to collect the unpaid bills before we had another disaster. When I ran into an old colleague from the hospital, he told me about medical billing services, and how they could really benefit our practice. I thought about this idea long and hard and eventually I decided I would check into it and started searching online. I was somewhat surprised to learn that medical billing companies are actually rather practical and affordable for even small clinics such as my own, and not primarily for large hospitals.
I decided to give it a try and almost instantly we could see that it was a much more effective way to run the office, since we didn't have to fret over whether the bills were getting paid, we could just do our jobs and help our patients. Now that we've done it, I will never look back, and I'll stop thinking that I can't have services that will make my practice better.
