Do You Have "Bellevue Neck"?

By Dr. Michael Weir

Being a Bellevue chiropractor, and after seeing thousands of patients over the years, I have begun to see certain patterns in certain groups of patients. For instance, woman who wear high heels for many years have a VERY high likely hood they will have low back pain. Another one is people who have computer jobs all have very similar neck and back problems, and their necks all have a certain look to them. This has become so common in the city that I practice, Bellevue WA, because of the many computer jobs, that I have coined the term "Bellevue Neck".

The reason that computer jobs do this to the neck is all mechanical in nature. If you wrench a structure into an unnatural position and then keep it there for long enough, its going to stay there. This is what happens to the neck and head.

In neurology we call this process plasticity. Think of your spine like a piece of plastic, bend it too far and it will get stuck there. On the positive side of things, you can also bend things back to their normal position with the right treatments.

I have coined the term "Bellevue Neck" for those with straight necks or a loss of neck curve. A lost curve in the neck can cause headaches, neck pain, middle back pain, and even low back pain if it is a bad enough case.

I work with patients on a daily basis who's neck pain, mid back pain, headaches, tmj, and so on, are due to their "Bellevue Neck". The key is to reverse the damages done and then prevent them from happening again. Chiropractic care is the best suited form of treatment for cases of Bellevue neck, and specific exercises are important to keep your spine in place.
