An Overview of Star Wars: the Old Republic Gaming

By Kathy Monington

The massively popular MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic (or SWTOR) was released last December and has sold millions of copies over the last year. I think it's safe to say that the release has been a huge success. The game itself is based on one of the most popular sci-fi franchises in the world: Star Wars. Because of this, the game is sure to have lasting power.

The game's main storyline is set back centuries before Darth Vader's presence. During this time, the two factions: the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic have been at odds for generations. After the Treaty of Coruscant was signed, the fighting stopped for quite some time. However, wars were still going on in other parts of the galaxy.

When you first begin playing SWTOR, you will have to create a character. This first step involves choosing which faction you will be loyal to: the Sith Empire or the Galactic Republic. Each side has four different classes specific to that faction. For example, players can choose to play: Jedi Knight, Bounty Hunter, Sith Warrior and Smuggler. There are many class options available and gamers will undoubtedly find one that fits their style.

After choosing your faction and class, you will need to choose which race you will want to play. A few of the races include: Human, Sith Pureblood, Zabrak and Twi'lek. Gamers can also customize the way their character looks through a multitude of different options. During gameplay, you will pick up different pieces of armor or clothing that will even further your character's appearance.

Star Wars: The Old Republic also has an interesting companion system. These friends enhance your gaming experience by aiding you in combat or healing you. Throughout your travels in the galaxy, you will come across these companions and their appearance can also be customized. Companions can carry out missions, craft items and get materials for you. If you feel compelled, one of your companions can become your love interest.

Space combat is another exciting aspect of the gaming experience. It's a lot like an interactive movie. Ships are unique to each class and can be upgraded over time. Upgraded ships are needed to complete advanced space combat dailies. Flashpoints are another great feature of the game. These are much like the dungeons found in other MMORPGs. They involve boss fights and epic loot. Star Wars: The Old Republic also has PVP (player versus player) Warzones, which are a lot like the battlegrounds found in World of Warcraft. Opposing factions attempt to complete certain objectives.
