Learn what features the best small printers all have in common

By Aj Jensen

Visualize travelling to an important meeting on the local public transport. On your way you realize you forgot to print out some paperwork. If you had a portable printer you could print the document using your smart phone, attend the meeting, and never miss a beat.

Portable, travel, and mobile printers have a lot of uses. They are great for printing boarding passes, documents, or any other last minute paperwork you need. Their convenience justifies the extra expense for most people.

Portable printers have a smaller footprint but they have all the same capabilities as any other printer of larger size. Many of these printers are WiFi/Bluetooth capable, can operate using a battery, and are much smaller and lighter weight.

There are a lot of great small printers but some should be avoided. Small printers are generally slower at printing and have lower resolution. Make sure you check how many pages per minute each printer can print (including in color). WiFi/Bluetooth is also available on many models, as is battery power, but not all. Finally, the smallest printers use thermal technology as opposed to ink, but we'll discuss this in more detail further on.

If connecting to your smart phone or laptop is important, be sure the printer is WiFi or Bluetooth capable. Generally, you have to pay $50 or more for the additional hardware to enable this feature, so be sure to budget this in when choosing between different printers.

The smallest of the small printers all use thermal technology. This technology is very reliable, but it's slow, low resolution, only black and white, and has limited wireless connectivity options. If size is the most important factor then thermal technology might be right for you. Otherwise, go with the more familiar Ink Jet technology.

To recap, small printers are just like any other printer, but they are more portable, usually wireless capable, and are often able to operate on a battery.
