Playing On A Mac: How It Evolved Through Time

By Mathew Jonathally

In the nineties, finding a game that can be played on a Mac led only to disappointment mainly because in those days such games were scarce. Although Apple has become well-liked for the clean design and the intuitiveness of their different computer offerings, the vertical integration of their hardware and their relatively fewer customization possibilities made developing games for it relatively challenging.

Apple's closed thinking to computer development has also discouraged many people who are into gaming from getting a Mac. One more reason why Macs really were not regarded as an appealing gaming platform is that it was only beginning of the 21st century when Apple decided to replace their PowerPC processors with Intel-based ones and offered multiple button support for mice and standalone graphic cards which have long become de facto standards for PC gaming rigs since the gaming industry boom in the Nineties.

Macs have been often considered as generally superior at graphics, developing animation, and editing different kinds of media compared to Windows-based computers , so many gamers felt that it was such a pity that it didn't rival the latter in terms of gaming. The good thing is that Apple has been developing new Macs that are now capable of running games. For instance, the Cupertino-based company has provided Boot Camp with their OSX 10.4 Tiger release that permitted end users to partition their Mac computers and run a Windows OS and therefore get the best of both worlds - the intuitiveness of a Mac that is able to run Windows-based games

The roll-out of Steam service, which helped bring a spectacular library of gaming titles for Mac, has also increased the appeal of Macs as a gaming system. Some game designers are also taking notice and have built games can be played natively on Mac computers. There are also games otherwise only available for Windows PCs that are ported to Mac by third-party porting houses which include MacPlay.

Today, one could already play flight simulator made for Macs which in the past were only accessible to Windows users. The best thing about these simulator games is that they provide people an chance to try a thing they otherwise do not have the resources to try out in the real world, such as flying a plane or being behind the wheels of a race car. Like those playable on Windows-based PCs, these simulator games offer a variety of missions with primary and secondary aims.

Physical retail shops still do not carry a lot of for Mac games though because Mac gaming is not yet as widespread. That said, if you want to find flight simulators for Macs, your best bet would be to search and buy from online stores through Steam and other niche websites that provide games free of charge or for a fee.
