Choosing Kindle Cases For Your EBook Reader

By Ken Mackle

You've bought the Kindle, now you need to buy your Kindle cases. There is a wide variety of covers on the market and all serve the main purpose of protecting it. The cover you chose should suit your lifestyle and it can express yourself at the same time. Make sure you buy the right sized case for the model as they each differ a little.

Book cover-style cases give you book-like easy reading. Shaped like the sleeve of a hardcover, your e-reader is fastened by corner straps inside the back cover. A "secret diary" clasp may hold the book closed when not in use. Book covers are sold an inspiring variety of elegant and witty designs. Classic leather in all shades from executive black to elegant white, vibrant red, pink and blue, animal prints and antique tooled book covers.

The "false book" lets you take self-expression even further with the faux cover of a classic. Most of these are also sold in less expensive leather-look (also called leather-style and vegan leather). All tastes are satisfied with microfiber, damask and even natural hemp options; shop around until you find the case that feels good to touch.

If you're always on the go with your book to hand then try the folio-style cover. Slick and compact, this may have a section where money, credit cards and travel tickets can be securely tucked away. The cover closes firmly and it may have a carry strap. Folios come in many hard-wearing materials.

A fold out stand means you have a protective cover for the case but are also able to read without holding the device. Release the stand from the case and set it up on a surface for easy reading. These are available in landscape and portrait format.

While the Kindle readers are famously easy to read in bright sunlight, the e-ink display means that reading in low-light isn't possible. To get around this, opt for a case that includes a reading lamp. These small battery-powered lights clip onto the case so that you can read in the dark.

To avoid the bulk of a case opt for a sleeve. Simply slip the reader into the lightweight pouch. The neoprene model is great for travel as it's low cost and protects against bumps and splashes and is also sold in reversible fabric with a different pattern inside and out - two for the price of one! Silicone sleeves are ultra-thin; the ultimate sleek no-bulk case and lovely to the touch. Jazz up your Kindle with colorful stick on skins, although remember they don't provide the same protection as Kindle cases - you'll still need those.
