Looking At The Features Of The Brother DCP-7040 Black-And-White Laser Printer

By Stepen Rusell

Small offices and homes can rely on the Brother DCP-7040 to take care of their everyday printing needs. But this black-and-white printer can do more than that. It's also designed to perform copying and scanning tasks.

It's fast enough to churn out up to 23 black-and-white prints per minute. Using laser technology and a maximum print resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi (dots per inch), text-based documents can come out clean and sharp. The manufacturer has set the recommended monthly print volume to 250 to 2000 pages. This makes the unit ideal for installation where light to moderate printing with professional quality is needed.

You can take advantage of additional features such as watermark, booklet and poster printing. However, duplex capability is only the manual type. There's a standard internal 16MB memory, good enough for handling even complex printing tasks.

Media sizes which can be handled by this versatile printer's adjustable 250-sheet paper tray range from A4, A5, B5, letter, legal, to executive. But custom sizes (3" x 4.75" to 8.5" x 14") may be handled by the manual feed tray. This is also what's commonly used when you require printing on media with thicker sizes, avoiding paper jams.

The machine works as a stand-alone copier, meaning you don't have to turn on a computer each time. Multiple copies are taken care of by the 35-sheet capacity ADF or auto document feeder. As for copying thicker objects such as bound media, the top panel sports a glass platen. This machine is fast enough to churn out up to 23 copies per minute. 2-in-1 and 4-in-1 functions compress copies on a single sheet for paper conservation. Enlargement and reduction is possible (400% to 25%).

Although printing and copying are in monochrome only, color scanning is around. An optical scanning resolution of up to 600 x 2400 dots per inch is used, but an interpolated one means you can enjoy a maximum of 19200 x 19200 dots per inch resolution. The machine takes on a flatbed scanner type, with the use of the platen on the top panel. Scans may come in BMP, JPG, TIFF, PNG, PDF and MAX formats. It's also possible to directly scan to a file, image, e-mail and OCR.

The Brother DCP-7040 comes with a compact footprint, measuring 16.9" (width) x 15.6" (depth) x 12" (height). This machine weighs 24.4 pounds. Hi-speed USB 2.0 is the interface for connecting to a single computer. Operation is simplified by means of the well-organized buttons and two-liner display on the large control panel. However, this one lacks two important features that are usually present on other multifunction printers: faxing and networking.
